There's nothing little about the #6. The brand posted some early images of the car to its Weibo page, while at the same time, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) revealed the details on its own.
At 193.1 inches long, this is a half-foot longer than any other Smart. It's about the same length as an Audi A6 sedan, and almost eight feet longer than the first-generation ForTwo. The car tips the scales at 4,627 pounds in its heaviest version, which puts it at nearly the same weight as three FourTwo models combined.
Mercedes' Forgotten Tiny Car Brand Wants To Build A Miata Rival
Smart thinks it can out-smart the Japanese with the potential to bring back its sporty roadster to take on the iconic Mazda MX-5 Miata.
It's also big under the hood. A 1.5-liter turbo-four works as a range extender and can power the tires, along with a large electric motor. Between the two, the car makes 429 horsepower. Meanwhile, it'll drive 177 miles on the battery alone or an absurd 1,125 miles (on the very generous CLTC test) using both electric and gas.
There is some Mercedes-Benz influence in the design, which looks a lot like the company's latest CLA. The sleek shape should cut through the air quite well, too. If you're looking for cheap and cheerful like the old Smart, you won't find it here. The exterior cameras, active rear spoiler, and the LiDAR sensors on the roof make that immediately obvious.
None of the official photos show the cabin, but we have an idea of what to expect. Take a look inside the Smart #5, which has a digital dash linked to two more displays for a wall-to-wall treat for your eyes. One that still seems to have at least a little bit of Mercedes-Benz input or at least influence.
The #6 will likely borrow or expand on some of the other tech features of the #5. The Smart Pilot Assist automated driving system, for example, and the augmented reality head-up display. The #5 uses AMD desktop-grade processing to give it the computer power it needs to deliver those features and run its five interior screens.
This info dump wasn't a full reveal. This was more of an effort to bring some of the hype of the government announcing the information back to the company's channels. The full reveal will come later. So expect more details down the road, including what we're sure will be an almost offensively low MSRP.
