The New AMG GT Will Look Better Than Its XX Concept

2 weeks, 2 days ago - 30 June 2025, carbuzz
When the Mercedes Concept AMG GT XX debuted, the CarBuzz team noticed that the electric super sedan had significant styling differences from the vehicle in earlier teaser images. Most notably, the headlights with illuminated three-pointed elements and single, round taillights were absent on the latest concept.

Plus, there were design alterations to the nose, with the GT XX featuring big ducts on the hood that were absent in previous photos.

A new spy video (below) clarifies the situation because it shows a near-production version of AMG's upcoming performance EV. The car looks far more like the vehicle in earlier teasers and has much less in common with the AMG GT XX. While the attractiveness of a vehicle's design is subjective, the more subdued, upscale look on display here might garner more premium vehicle buyers than the XX's far more aggressive appearance. The design in this clip has a strong resemblance to the Vision AMG concept.

Take A Good Look At AMG's High-Performance EV

The video immediately provides a fantastic look at the new performance sedan's front end. There's a thin inlet spanning most of the lower fascia's width and a vertical slit on each corner. The car's hazard lights are on, letting us see the three-pointed signature illumination blinking. Like on the latest CLA-Class, they're a clever way to incorporate the Mercedes emblem into the vehicle's design.

The hood is low-slung and has a smooth appearance. The car in the above video features a raised area on the nose, and it's unclear whether this section is a camouflaged element or part of the final design.

The electric AMG has a particularly sleek profile. The steeply angled windshield leads to a flowing roof and a nearly flat rear deck. At the 23-second mark, there's an alternate view showing the active spoiler extended. Rather than wheels with adjustable vents from the GT XX, this car wears a multi-spoke layout and Michelin tires.

At the back, the sedan has a liftback rear deck where the panel and glass open together. The layout should create a larger opening, making it easier to load gear into the trunk. There's a single taillight on each side, and like the headlamps, each one features a stylized three-pointed star element. The amber-colored turn signal strips appear to be placeholder pieces for this development vehicle. More To Know About The Upcoming AMG EV

While Mercedes-AMG is teasing the electric sedan's exterior, its production-spec drivetrain is more of a mystery. The GT XX concept uses three of the automaker's new axial-flux electric motors – one at the front and two at the rear – to produce more than 1,341 horsepower. The system is capable of charging at an impressive 850 kilowatts at 1,000 amps, which allows for recouping 249 miles of range in a mere five minutes, assuming a person can find a charging station capable of supporting this much power.

The only performance spec that Mercedes released about the GT XX was its top speed. The concept can hit 223 miles per hour, making it even faster than the 219-mph AMG One hypercar. Given how Mercedes is promoting the axial-flux motors in recent concepts, it's possible these high-tech pieces might be in the production version, too. Compared to existing radial-flux motors, the new units are more compact, lighter, and have better sustained power and torque output.

The XX's battery is a nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum (NCMA) cathode design with 3,000 cells. An oil-cooling system circulates fluid through the pack to keep everything running cool or heat things up to the proper operating temperature.

The production model's launch date is also a burning question. Between showing the XX concept and this spy video, it seems like development is at an advanced stage. Plus, the year is only half over. It's possible the full debut could happen before the end of 2025. However, don't expect to see this EV on the road until sometime in 2026.
