The current Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class has seen a thing or two. It's been around since 2019, got a refresh for the 2024 model year, and a new version is in the works.

We haven't seen much in the way of prototypes, but this one caught the attention of CarBuzz spy photographers. And we were quick enough to glimpse inside the big Mercedes for a sneak peek of its new digital interior.

That's not all we caught, however. Wearing just some camouflage wrap and the front and rear, it's impossible to hide some very specific styling cues that identify this as an AMG GLS 63. Moreover, it could be even more powerful than the current model on sale. Here's what we know about it so far.

Though it's been around for a few years and already subject to one refresh, this doesn't appear to be a next-generation model. We suspect Mercedes – like many automakers right now – is slowing its role on future plans amid tariffs and changing demand for EVs. As such, the current GLS will live on a few years longer, and on the outside, we won't see substantial changes. If we take a very close look at the front, we can suss out the new headlights that are slightly smaller and more teardrop-shaped versus the current models.

We can also tell this is the high-performance AMG model by looking at the Panamericana grille. There's no missing the vertical bars that define this style, but the overall size and shape appear unchanged. It might be a little taller; the grille surround looks a bit thicker, especially at the top. The lower fascia has false panels behind the camo that hide the true shape of the corner vents. They will still be quite prominent, with the lower grille still thin and long with its frowning face.

If there was any doubt about this prototype being a GLS 63, it's erased at the back. There's no missing the telltale quad exhaust outlets, but we think the abundance of camo wrap here is a red herring. We can see body lines and thin red reflectors down low that mimic the current design. The hatch also appears the same. We bet the only notable change will be new taillights, and even then, they might have the same general shape, just with different internal elements.

If the exterior differences seem uhnderwhelming, you will likely feel different about the interior. We get just a quick peek through the passenger window as it drives past the camera, but it's enough to see a big ol' Mercedes MBUX Superscreen front and center. Spanning the entire width of the GLS's greenhouse, it will incorporate three displays in one single pane of glass. In this case, it looks more like the proportional screen used in the CLA-Class versus the notched style in the E-Class.

Note the turbine climate vents at the corners. We can also see the bottom of the screen running straight from side-to-side. We see an Apple CarPlay logo on the center screen, confirming at least a little bit of technology coming to the new GLS-Class. It's a completely different layout compared to the current SUV, bringing it inline with other Mercedes models.

What About Power?
We can't talk about the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 without at least some mention of what's under the hood. At this point, there's no reason to doubt the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 won't return. Incorporating mild hybrid technology, it generates 603 horsepower and sends it to all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic transmission. The real question is whether even more power will be extracted from the current setup, or if something new is added. A plug-in hybrid powertrain pulled from the bonkers AMG GT 63 S E Performance could be wild, but alas, we see no evidence of a plug-in charge port on this prototype.
