The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has a devoted following that adores the SUV's boxy shape, and in AMG dress, it's exceptional power. To Mercedes' credit, engineers are doing their best to keep the popular people mover current both on and off the road. As such, the automaker announced some minor trim changes and fresh options earlier this week, including extensive customization features. However, there are a couple of packages for AMG models that warrant some extra attention.
We start with something called the AMG Trail Package. While the G-Class is certainly capable as an off-road machine, the high-performance G63 is often relegated to tearing up asphalt with extreme prejudice. This new package seeks to better utilize the Merc's supercar-esque performance off the beaten path by softening the suspension just a bit. Yes, the AMG still has its adaptive setup, but everything is cushioned just a bit, and that can make a big difference on rougher terrain.
The package also includes special twin five-spoke 20-inch wheels with all-terrain rubber as well as mud flaps and increased underbody protection. It's still safe to say the AMG G63 isn't ready to go Raptor hunting on high-speed trails, but for G-Class enthusiasts who want to use AMG power for getting dirty, this could be a big step in the right direction.
The other offering is the curiously named Stronger Than Time Edition. This is relegated to an appearance package marking the 20th anniversary of the AMG-tuned G-Class. Stronger Than Time Edition models will wear a special grille in dark chrome, with a matte chrome finish for the running boards, exhaust tips, mirror housings, and various trim elements around the SUV. Naturally, it rides on package-specific 22-inch wheels, and among the various customizable interior items is a cool Stronger Than Time welcome projection that appears in the entrance area. Here's hoping the G-Class does actually age well, otherwise that projection could get a bit awkward.
Mercedes hasn't yet released pricing and availability for these packages.
