The G-Wagen has become a mainstay of the Mercedes-Benz lineup. It's immensely popular. It's profitable. And Mercedes has been steadily fleshing out its offerings to create a G-Class sub-brand. Mercedes built an all-electric version, the G 580 with EQ Technology. And a smaller, more affordable "baby G-Class" crossover is in the works.

Mercedes is also building a convertible version, which the brand will sell in the U.S. market. We don't have a name for the convertible G-Wagen yet; Mercedes-Benz is referring to it as the "open top G-class." And Mercedes has confirmed the new SUV variant is in testing.

We Don't Know A Lot About Mercedes's New Convertible G-Class Yet

Mercedes has confirmed the vehicle is happening. The brand released new teaser photos showing a camouflaged model (which doesn't look that far off production) testing in Austria. Mercedes plans to have it undergo winter testing in Sweden. It is a four-door convertible.

Mercedes noted the initial teaser from September elicited an "immensely positive response." The brand has promised that "further details will be available in the future." And Mercedes claims the car will deliver an "unparalleled and unmistakable G-class experience."

When Will The Mercedes G-Class Convertible Arrive?
Mercedes-Benz did not provide a launch date for the convertible G-Class. But using some deductive reasoning, the convertible G-Wagen may not be too far away.

Mercedes just revamped the G-Class for the 2025 model year. The design changes likely factored in that Mercedes would build an eventual convertible version. Teaser photos from the brand show a vehicle that looks very close to production-ready. If the G-Class convertible is testing now, a debut sometime in 2026 feels realistic.

This Will Be The First Mercedes G-Class Convertible For Quite A While
Mercedes-Benz has offered a convertible G-Class in the past. However, this will be the first convertible G-Class since the W463 generation model retired in 2018. Mercedes sent the two-door G-Class Cabriolet with a final edition in 2014. Mercedes-Maybach produced a special-edition G650 Landaulet four-door SUV in 2018. That was a very limited run of less than 100 units.

How Much Will A Mercedes G-Class Convertible Cost?
The G-Class Convertible will be expensive. The question is how expensive. And that's a tricky question to answer because we don't know how Mercedes will position the model within the existing hierarchy. We could see Mercedes offering it on both G-class models, keeping it for just the AMG G63 or slotting it above as a special model.

We suspect the next G-Class convertible won't be as exclusive as the last one. The G650 Landaulet was a massive luxury SUV with a twin-turbo V12, portal axles, and an extended wheelbase. Mercedes never revealed the pricing for the G650 Landaulet. But with uber-celebrities such as LeBron James getting one, it's safe to say it's not cheap. And versions have auctioned for more than $1 million.

The G-Class Convertible from the Mercedes teaser photos looks far closer to the conventional G-Class. The current base model Mercedes-Benz G550 starts at $153,900 MSRP. The top-of-the-line AMG G63 starts at $195,500 MSRP. The G-Class Convertible will likely cost a fair premium above that.
